Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship Program
Intro Heading link
The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Illinois Chicago offers 1-3 fellowship positions each year for dedicated physicians interested in obtaining exceptional training in endocrinology. Fellows can choose to focus on a Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism pathway through a two year training track. Alternatively, candidates targeting a career in academic medicine can apply for a combined 3 year program in Clinical and Research Endocrinology and Metabolism, supported in part by a training grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Program Overview Heading link
The Endocrine Fellowship Training Program offers opportunities for training in both the clinical and research aspects of endocrinology and metabolism. The scope and structure of the clinical program is designed to fulfill both the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) training requirements. Fellows can choose to focus on training in Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism through a two-year training track. Alternatively, candidates targeting a career in academic medicine can apply for a combined 3 year program in Clinical and Research Endocrinology and Metabolism, supported in part by a training grant from the National Institutes of Health. Trainees completing this program also will be board eligible in Endocrinology and Metabolism and have a variety of opportunities for in-depth training in clinical, translational or basic research, with a special emphasis on diabetes, nutrition and obesity.
Our trainees have full exposure to all aspects of endocrinology. The goal of the program is to provide comprehensive, academically-based training and experience that would give opportunities to the fellows for developing the knowledge, interpersonal skills, professional attitudes, and practical competence required to function as consultants in the field of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.
Mission/Goals Heading link

Fellowship Curriculum
Clinical Training
One of the highlights of our fellowship program is the emphasis on longitudinal clinical care for entire duration of the training. Clinical activities include Outpatient Clinics and Inpatient Consult Service rotations. A major part of the clinical time in the fellowship program is devoted to patient care in ambulatory settings. Fellows typically attend 3 to 4 clinic sessions weekly. The core clinics that provide continuity throughout training are the UIC General Endocrinology Clinic and the Jesse Brown VA General Endocrine Clinic. Additionally, fellows have opportunity to rotate in an expanding group of subspecialty clinics currently including Thyroid Cancer clinic, Pituitary clinic, and Type 1 Diabetes clinic. Other clinics offer additional exposure and clinical training in other subspecialties (Pediatric Endocrinology, Reproductive Endocrinology). Fellows are trained in endocrinology specific procedures like ultrasound guided fine needle aspirations, bone densitometry, insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring.
Research Training
Our fellowship program offers a variety of opportunities for in-depth training in clinical, translational or basic research. The research experience is based on a mentor-fellow relationship that leads to formulation of a research question, the development and implementation of the experimental design, data interpretation and, eventually, publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Conferences
Several important conferences are offered to enhance clinical training and academic development of our trainees. Fellows are expected to participate in:
