Meet the Chief: Dr. Brian T. Layden
Brian T. Layden, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago and Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Division Chief for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Illinois Chicago. The major focus of his research is to investigate pathways involved in the development of diabetes and gestational diabetes. Through genetic models largely created by his group, his laboratory is investigating different genes and pathways involved in glucose regulation. In addition to genetic mouse models, his group complements these approaches with a large range of in vitro approaches including cell-based assays and studies investigating isolated protein functional activity. In addition to being funded through multiple agencies including the NIH and VA, he has formed a company, Islet Therapeutics, to further develop some patented technologies that may lead into new treatment approaches for diabetes. He also sees patients focusing on diabetes care and management.

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Illinois Chicago has some of the best clinicians and researchers in the Chicagoland area, and has become one of the premier sites in the Midwest for clinical and research training in these fields. Our faculty includes 3 who are part of the prestigious American Society of Clinical Investigation, an honors society organization for the most recognized physician scientists. We also currently have multiple funded NIH and VA investigators. As diabetes and obesity are the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases and death in the US, our goal is to develop and collaborate across our institution to develop a clinical center that has a multidisciplinary clinical care approach, comprehensive educational resources and robust clinical research enterprise for these pertinent diseases.
The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is committed to excellence in the diagnosis, management, and study of endocrine and metabolic disorders. The latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are used in the clinical evaluation and management of patients.
