Premier T32 Fellowship Resources
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is Chicago’s largest and only public research university with more than 29,100 students, about 8,400 faculty and staff members, 15 colleges, and the state’s major public medical center. A hallmark of the campus is the Great Cities Commitment, through which UIC faculty, students and staff engage with community, corporate, foundation, and government partners in hundreds of programs to improve the quality of life in metropolitan areas around the world.
Receiving more than $446 million in extramural research awards in FY2021, UIC ranks among the leading universities in federal research funding. Its students reflect the global character of Chicago; more than a third speak English as a second language and 50 percent of undergraduates and 30 percent of graduate and professional students belong to ethnic minority groups. More than one in three UIC undergraduates are first-generation college students.
Occupying more than 100 buildings on approximately 240 acres just west of downtown Chicago, UIC offers 85 bachelor’s, 98 master’s, and 65 doctoral degree programs. The UIC medical campus resides in the Illinois Medical District, one of the world’s largest concentrations of advanced public and private healthcare facilities.
Center for Clinical & Translational Research Science (CCTS)
The CCTS serves as the intellectual and geographic home for clinical and translational research at UIC. The CCTS has been funded by the National Institutes of Health via a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) since 2008. The CCTS now serves as the institutional home for clinical and translational research by coordinating resources and services that facilitate health research and advance knowledge across the translational spectrum. As one of the few U.S. universities with the full range of health science colleges- including the largest medical college in the country- UIC has provided fertile ground for the establishment and growth of the CCTS. UIC’s location in the heart of Chicago allows the CCTS access to a variety of diverse community groups, helping ensure that research advances are relevant to and used by populations most in need. Through strong institutional support, the CCTS is a focal point for developing and nurturing interdisciplinary collaborations that will help to advance the university’s clinical and translational research enterprise.
Library of Health Sciences
The UIC Library is a full-service facility that is easily accessible to UIC investigators. Its collection is comprehensive, including materials on all of the subject fields of interest to the teaching, basic research, and clinical units that it serves. The library subscribes to over 5,500 periodicals - either virtual or paper - and holds more than 450,000 bound periodical volumes, books, government documents, and audio-visual items. The Library is a member of the Biomedical Communications Network and uses the computerized information retrieval systems of Bibliographic Retrieval Services, Inc., the National Library of Medicine, Lockhead DIALOG Information Systems, the Institute for Scientific Information, and System Development Corporation. Access to these 5 systems makes available more than 100 databases such as MEDLINE, TOXLINE, CANCERLIT, HEALTHLINE, Excerpta Medica, Psychological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Biological Abstracts, ERIC, Science Citation Index, and the New York Times Information Bank. UIC’s Health Sciences Library is one of the designated resource libraries within the Midwest Health Science Library Network. It serves as the National Library of Medicine’s Regional Medical Library for a 6-state region composed of the states of Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
