Medicine-Geriatrics Pathway Fellowship
Program Overview
University of Illinois at Chicago also offers a combined residency/fellowship Medicine-Geriatrics Pathway, which is a four-year program for internal medicine (IM) and family medicine (FM) residents to integrate Geriatrics longitudinally throughout their training during their residency training with a capstone fourth year fellowship year. This program was approved July 2025. The first three years is a woven introduction to Geriatrics through continuity panels in the Geriatrics outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, geriatric-relevant electives, and inpatient consult service. Fellows are encouraged to tailor their final year to pursue their career goals whether it be academic, specific practice, or subspecialty careers. Following completion of the first 3 years of training, the resident will be board eligible to be certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, dependent on the pathway chosen. After the fourth and final year of the program, fellows are board eligible for Geriatric Medicine. There is one spot reserved for the IM/Geri and one spot reserved for the FM/Geri resident annually.
