The Division of Nephrology is committed to excellence in the areas of patient care, teaching, and research. ​We are committed to providing high-quality, culturally competent, patient-centered care for adults with kidney disease, in a learning environment that prioritizes evidence-based approaches, diversity and inclusion.

About Us

Research

The Division of Nephrology offers oppurtunities for trainees to be involved in ongoing research as well as with smaller and short term projects in both basic science and patient-oriented disciplines. Basic science research opportunities are available in different investigators’ laboratories addressing a variety of interests related to cell biology, acute renal failure, autoimmunity, and acid-base physiology and pathophysiology.

Patient Care

The Division of Nephrology at UI Health treats patients with conditions and diseases of the kidney, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, glomerular disease, kidney stones, and end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. Our kidney transplant outcomes are among the best in Chicago. The Division of Nephrology has a rich history of excellence in the field of kidney disease treatment and research.

Our Clinical Programs

Kidney Transplantation

Our Kidney Transplant Program is one of the largest and most experienced kidney transplantation programs in Chicago. Our teams of experts work closely with patients through every stage, from pre-transplant care to postsurgical monitoring. We are committed to providing patients and their families personalized treatment options for the best surgical outcomes.

Dialysis Services

The ESRD Program at UI Health features a 23-chair outpatient dialysis unit, a 9-bed hospital dialysis unit, and dialysis services in local skilled nursing facilities. Our dialysis services include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and short daily home dialysis.

Fellowship Program

The primary goal of the nephrology training program is to ensure that trainees acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills that characterize the practice of nephrology and that will enable them to contribute maximally to improving the health and quality of life of the individuals and communities they serve.
