Application process

You must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted by September 15th of the year preceding the appointment date.

The application requires the following information:

Application checklist

  • Official medical school transcripts

  • Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations (USMLE, with Step 1 a minimum requirement)

  • MSPE (Medical Student Performance Evaluation)

  • At least three letters of recommendation, with two being SLOEs

  • Current CV/Resume

  • Personal Statement

The interview

Applications will be reviewed and select candidates will be invited for an interview at UIC. Our interviews are held on Thursdays starting in early November to late January.

The match

Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All candidates must register through the NRMP.

Interview day

Hello future UIC Residents! Welcome to the University of Illinois at Chicago Emergency Medicine Residency Day- we are very excited to see you on interview day.

Please meet us in the Emergency Medicine administrative offices located at 808 South Wood Street (notably named the ‘910’ building), room 469 at 9:00 a.m. Enter at the corner of Wood and Polk Streets. Take the elevator to the fourth floor, turn left, and you will see our conference room at the end of the hallway.

  • 9am: Introductions by Dr. Brad Bunney (Residency Program Director), Dr. Terry VandenHoek (Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine), and other faculty members.
  • 10am: Join our weekly conference for a glimpse into our weekly education process
  • 11:30am: Lunch with our residents
  • 12:30pm: Interviews with senior residents, faculty, and program leadership
  • 3-4pm: End of interview day

We will be sponsoring an optional residents/applicants dinner on Wednesday night if you are in town. This is not required but allows another opportunity to discuss the program with our residents.

The dinner will take place at Piece Restaurant, 1927 West North Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60622, 773-772-4422, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

If you are making arrangements to leave Chicago Thursday night, we recommend you make reservations no earlier than 6:00 p.m.
