IDPH Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Report October 2023
- IDPH Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Report October 2023: Maternal mortality (death) is an important measure for assessing the overall health of a community. Using a variety of data sources, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) identifies all deaths of women while pregnant or within one year of pregnancy (pregnancy-associated deaths). IDPH convenes two maternal mortality review committees (MMRCs), which review specific cases of maternal death to identify the causes of death, determine whether the deaths were pregnancy-related, determine whether the deaths were preventable, and develop recommendations to prevent future deaths.

Module B
- AWHONN Maternal Fetal Triage Index: The Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI) is an evidence-based flow diagram developed by Association of Obstetrics Women’s Health and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). The MFTI has a five-level system to facilitate the care of pregnant women seeking care in an obstetrical triage unit, with 1 being the highest acuity and priority 5 being the lowest acuity. The development and structure of the Emergency Severity Index informed the intial draft of the MFTI.

JOGNN, 44(6), 701-709. https://doi.org/10.1111/1552-6909.12763 - Maternal Early Warning Criteria: A multidisciplinary working group convened by the National Partnership for Maternal Safety used a consensus-based approach to define The Maternal Early Warning Criteria, a list of abnormal parameters that indicate the need for urgent bedside evaluation by a clinician with the capacity to escalate care as necessary in order to pursue diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. This commentary reviews the evidence supporting the use of early-warning systems, describes The Maternal Early Warning Criteria, and provides considerations for local implementation.

These symptoms could indicate a life-threatening situation. The Urgent Maternal Warning Signs were developed by the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM).
- Emergency Severity Index (ESI): A Triage Tool for Emergency Departments: The Emergency Nurses’ Association (ENA) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) formed a joint triage taskforce where they developed the emergency severity index scale. This algorithm is based on acuity and resources and stratifies the patient into five categories from least to most urgent.

- Perinatal Triage Algorithm: The Perinatal Triage Algorithm combines the Emergency Deverity Index (ESI), the Maternal Early Warning System Triggers, and the AWHONN Maternal Fetal Triage Index into one algorithm for the care of perinatal patients.
- Postpartum Hemorrhage Management Checklist: The Postpartum Hemorrhage Checklist was created to guide in the management of a patient that presents with postpartum hemorrhage.
- Sepsis Algorithm: The Sepsis Algorithm was created to guide in the care of a perinatal patient that presents with the signs and symptoms of sepsis.
