Dr. Mayer is a proud member of the UIHealth community and Department of Medicine faculty. After graduating from Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed an internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Illinois Chicago. Drawn by an outstanding group of colleagues and the University’s commitment to the local community, he joined the UIC Department of Medicine and Infectious Diseases faculty in 2014.
Dr. Mayer has a strong interest in collaborative efforts to serve the Chicago community. He co-leads the UIC Outbreak Response Team – a joint initiative between UI Health, The Chicago Department of Public Health, and Rush University to investigate and contain infectious diseases outbreaks in Chicago. He also partners with the UIC School of Public Health, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Medicine to deliver innovative mobile and intersectional care to patients who use drugs.
Dr. Mayer’s research interests support his clinical and community service mission. He served as an investigator in the division’s HIV clinical research unit and served as the site-PI as a member of the COVID Prevention Network (CoVPN). He currently collaborates with investigators across the health system on Hepatitis C treatment models and healthcare workforce preparedness.
Before embarking on a career in medicine, Dr. Mayer worked in public and private sector business development. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala, he trained small business development leaders throughout the Jalapa region. He later worked with Booz Allen Hamilton’s International and Infrastructure team as a consultant. Dr. Mayer still works in Guatemala, assisting local governments with decentralization of HIV services, establishing comprehensive care programs, and implementing strategies for outreach to high-risk populations.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Mayer enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He can still be found on the soccer field from time to time.
