Our group has been involved in elucidating ion transport mechanisms (Na+, Cl– and SCFA–) in the human intestine with special emphasis on understanding mechanisms underlying pathophysiology of infectious or inflammatory diarrhea. We have also been involved in developing better therapeutic modalities for the treatment of diarrheal disorders. We have recently identified several proabsorptive molecules which upregulate intestinal chloride absorption e.g. lysophosphatidic acid, all-trans retinoic acid, neuropeptide Y and bioactive factors secreted by probiotics. In addition, we have strong interest in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) as it pertains to amelioration of inflammation by probiotics or GLP1 or VIP packaged as nano-medicine utilizing mouse models of colitis. We have all of the tools and techniques established to assess molecular mechanisms underlying diarrheal diseases and gut inflammation utilizing cell culture models, organoids and in-vivo models.
