Award Details
Each year, the Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine presents the Jay L. Goldstein MD Memorial Faculty Award for Exceptional Mentorship to a faculty member who exemplifies an unwavering commitment to mentoring and supporting learners.
This award honors individuals who demonstrate the same dedication to mentorship that defined Dr. Goldstein’s career, fostering the professional and personal growth of students, residents, and fellows through guidance, encouragement, and lasting impact.
The recipient is recognized for their contributions to mentorship and for upholding the values of excellence, compassion, and service that Dr. Goldstein embodied. In addition to this recognition, the award includes a monetary component from the Jay L. Goldstein Award Fund to support the recipient’s academic and professional development.
Award recipients are also commemorated within the Department of Medicine, reflecting the enduring importance of mentorship in our academic community.
About Dr. Goldstein
Jay Lawrence Goldstein, MD, was a widely respected gastroenterologist known not only for his academic and clinical excellence but also for his mentorship, unconditional friendship, and selfless giving to others.
He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1978, receiving his MD with honors. He went on to complete his residency, chief residency, and gastroenterology fellowship with the College, and then served as Professor of Medicine and Vice Head of Department of Medicine until his retirement in 2012. He then became the Division Head in Gastroenterology and Vice Chair of Medicine at NorthShore University Health System.
During his time at the College of Medicine, Dr. Goldstein devoted himself to serving as a primary mentor and advisor to over 150 medical students, over 100 internal medicine residents, and over 50 fellows in gastroenterology. Many of these relationships became lifelong friendships. He had the dedication and knack to stay in touch with his mentees throughout their careers, celebrating their achievements and providing guidance as needed.
In 2019, Dr. Goldstein was honored with the UIC Distinguished Alumnus award. During the presentation, Dr. Mrinalini Rao and Dr. Thomas Layden described him as a quadruple threat “who embraced and practiced the best of what this institution has to offer in building a career dedicated to patient care, research, education, and service.” He was truly an inspiration to many.
