Underrepresented in Medicine Scholarship
The Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) offers the Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Externship Scholarship to 4th-year medical students considering a career in emergency medicine. This externship provides students the opportunity to shadow and work alongside our EM residents. Interested and qualified students may have the option to extend their four-week placement by two additional weeks and augment their studies in one of the following concentrations.
- Social Emergency Medicine
- Toxicology
- Ultrasound
- Global Emergency Medicine
- Education and Simulation
- Resuscitation
- Informatics and Operations
Purpose
The UIC Emergency Medicine Residency program is committed to eliminating barriers that perpetute the under-representation of racial and ethnic groups in medicine.
Program
This four-week EM rotation integrates didactic learning with medical rotations at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health), or one of our affiliate sites: Advocate Illinois Masonic, OSF Little Company of Mary, and Advocate Lutheran General.
Scholarship awardees will engage in experiential learning through interaction with our EM residency training program and our resident and attending physicians. They will refine their clinical skills, practice ethics, responsibility, and professionalism – all essential competencies in becoming an EM resident.
Additionally, rotating students will attend weekly residency conferences and workshops. Rotators must complete an evidence-based medical presentation that explores a theme related to a patient they cared for in the ED.
