Healthcare Disparities Externship Scholarship

The University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Emergency Medicine has established a Health Disparities Scholarship for senior medical students considering a career in Emergency Medicine (EM). This program will offer exposure to an academic EM training program at an institution committed to health disparities amelioration and research. Students will have the opportunity to explore EM sub-specialty areas that are active at UIC including:

  • Health disparities research
  • Toxicology
  • Ultrasound (US)
  • International EM
  • Education and Simulation (SIM)
  • Resuscitation
  • Health Policy and Administration

Program

4 Week EM clerkship

All students chosen will rotate at the University of Illinois Hospital ED. In addition to clinical responsibilities, students will attend weekly residency conferences, student workshops and complete an evidenced based medical presentation exploring a topic related to a patient they cared for in the ED.

Purpose

The purpose of this program is to guide and support underrepresented medical students who have an interest in pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine. Students will be exposed to an academic EM department and residency training program.

Who should apply?

Highly motivated fourth year medical students with strong academic records who have an interest in or experience in the area of health disparities.

Program Dates

Scholarships are available for the following dates in 2021:

JUN 21 – JUL 17
JUL 19 – AUG 14
AUG 16 – SEP 11
SEP 13 – OCT 9

*Exceptions to these dates will be made on a case by case basis.

Financial Support

4-Week Program: $1500

Examples of covered expenses include:

  • Airfare/travel to/from home location to UIC,
  • Housing cost
  • Food stipend
  • UIC ID Card /Application fee

*To note: Scholarship Funds will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the elective, original receipts must be submitted for reimbursement & in the event the student chooses UIC housing, payment will be made directly to UIC Housing.
