Frequently Asked Questions
If I apply to Emergency Medicine or Internal Medicine at UIC, can I also apply to EM/IM?
Yes, you can apply to the EM/IM program, our dual Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine residency program, in addition to Emergency Medicine and/or Internal Medicine. Please note that the EM/IM program requires a separate submission through NRMP/ERAS. We strongly recommend including a personalized statement tailored specifically for the EM/IM program as part of your application. If I am invited for an interview, does my EM/IM interview also count for the Emergency or Internal Medicine programs?
As a separate program, we have an independent interview process. We understand the complexities of the interview season and the timing challenges for students. At this time, given the virtual nature of interviews, we are not combining interview days.If I request to interview with EM/IM and a parent program, will it reflect negatively on my application for either program?
No. Given the paucity of combined training opportunities nationwide, we understand that a student will look at other options. We expect it.What type of personal statement should I write?
Applicants who write a personal statement specifically targeted at combined training have a more competitive chance of matching into the program. How can I improve my chances of matching at UIC in EM/IM?
Solid performance on all clinical rotations, not just internal or emergency medicine, is important. Board scores must be competitive, but there is no minimum score for consideration in the program. Research, while not mandatory, will make any applicant more competitive. The application committee asks that applicants demonstrate leadership and excellence in their activities outside their medical pursuits. When can I schedule an interview?
The interview committee will contact applicants after reviewing application materials. You will be able to schedule your interview at that time. What do graduates do upon completion of the EM/IM program?
Graduates from the program oftentimes have an overwhelming variety of options upon completion. UIC has placed graduates in academic and community emergency medicine. We have graduates actively working in internal medicine subspecialities (after completing further fellowship training) and general internal medicine. Two UIC graduates are residency program directors, and one is an ER department head. Graduates currently represent UIC on a national level.Does the UIC EM/IM dual program consider graduates of osteopathic medical schools?
Applicants must have passed either USMLE Step 1 OR COMLEX Level 1 for consideration.Does the UIC EM/IM dual program consider graduates of foreign medical schools?
Due to our university requirements, we cannot take students with H1-B or J-1 visas into our residency.
