Established in 1978, the UIC Emergency Medicine Residency Program is one of the most seasoned and respected in the country.

With a unique multisite training model across four hospitals and a strong emphasis on mentorship, our program provides residents with unparalleled experiences and opportunities, preparing them to become future leaders in emergency medicine.

Welcome to emergency medicine. Our mission is to train the next generation of EM physicians who are not only outstanding clinicians but also have the experience and passion to care for anyone at any time in any situation. All EM residents receive good training, so what makes UIC unique? Experience, multiple training sites, and an unparalleled drive toward health equity.

Our Culture

Advocacy is a core value of our residency program, starting from the interview process and continuing throughout your time with us. We provide a wellness-focused education series, weekly protected didactic sessions, relief from clinical duties, and opportunities for sponsored dinners, retreats, outings, and celebrations.

Our commitment to advocacy extends to fostering equitable clinical and social interactions with our diverse patient populations. As physicians, we harness our influence to deliver medically excellent, patient-centered, and culturally competent care with the goal of improving health outcomes. We deeply value and respect the unique perspectives and experiences of each member of our program, recognizing that our diversity fuels insight, innovation, and creativity.

BrownCoat at Graduation Ceremony 2022

Our Ethos

Originally seen in our earliest participating rotation sites—Illinois Masonic, Lutheran General, and Mercy—our emergency medicine residents stood out by wearing brown lab coats instead of the traditional white. This distinction was intentionally made to set them apart from other residents and specialists in the hospital. Over time, the brown coat evolved into a symbol of excellence and pride, becoming emblematic of our residency program. Since 1981, wearing the brown coat has been a defining tradition, carrying great historical significance for our residents and giving rise to what is now proudly known as “BrownCoat Nation.”

A brown coat is not an article of clothing; it represents membership in a warm, welcoming family and portrays someone who trains hard to heal others, who has my back and whose back I’ve got. A BrownCoat is kindness, grit, smarts, jokes, passion, friendship, inclusiveness, and forgiveness. A BrownCoat is a family.
