Throughout his career, Dr. Blair has dedicated himself to research aimed at improving the clinical options for patients whose lives have been devastated by retinal diseases, especially diabetic retinopathy and other retinal vascular diseases. He is a highly respected clinician, surgeon and investigator who has received more than 20 years of support from the NEI as a principal investigator for multiple basic science and clinical studies. Among his more important contributions was the clarification of the way substances pass between the bloodstream and the retinal tissue, especially in diabetes. He has also examined and published on retinal oxygen delivery and consumption and on ocular glucose consumption. Additionally, he has authored or coauthored multiple papers on retinal imaging. Dr. Blair has authored over 175 original research articles. He joined UIC in 1980 and served as the Director of the Retina Service continuously from 1982 to 2006.
