A native of Puerto Rico, Julie obtained both her BS with honors in Industrial Microbiology at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, and her MD at Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. A self-starter, Dr Sanchez-Perez was engaged laboratory-based research as an undergraduate at the University of Puerto Rico and as a summer research fellow at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. In medical school, she participated in the NIDDK sponsored Summer Medical Student Program at Vanderbilt University where she was involved in clinical studies examining the effects of diet and levemir insulin in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. After successfully completing her Internal Medicine Residency training, she stayed at UIC to pursue an Endocrinology Fellowship. More recently, she was granted a NIDDK T32-Diversity Supplement Research Grant which she will be completing under the guidance of Dr. Kelsey Gabel in the topic of time restricted eating plus exercise for weight management.
