About

A native of Puerto Rico, Julie obtained both her BS with honors in Industrial Microbiology at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, and her MD at Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. A self-starter, Dr Sanchez-Perez was engaged laboratory-based research as an undergraduate at the University of Puerto Rico and as a summer research fellow at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. In medical school, she participated in the NIDDK sponsored Summer Medical Student Program at Vanderbilt University where she was involved in clinical studies examining the effects of diet and levemir insulin in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. After successfully completing her Internal Medicine Residency training, she stayed at UIC to pursue an Endocrinology Fellowship. More recently, she was granted a NIDDK T32-Diversity Supplement Research Grant which she will be completing under the guidance of Dr. Kelsey Gabel in the topic of time restricted eating plus exercise for weight management.

Research Interests: Obesity, Glycemic Control and Time-Restricted Eating

Career Path: Dr. Julienne Sánchez Pérez is an endocrinology fellow at UIC, where she is completing both her fellowship training (in Clinical Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (graduating June 2025) and Masters in Nutrition (completing May 2025). She earned her BS in Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, and her MD from Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamón, PR. Under the mentorship of Dr. Krista Varady, Professor of Nutrition, and Dr. Kelsey Gabel, Assistant Professor of Nutrition in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition, her research examines time-restricted eating (TRE) and its metabolic effects, particularly in patients with obesity and diabetes (T1 and T2).
