Geri Donenberg, PhD, Appointed NIH Associate Director of AIDS Research

Celebrating Dr. Geri Donenberg's Contributions to HIV Research and Leadership at UIC

We are thrilled to announce that Geri Donenberg, PhD, has been appointed as the NIH Associate Director of AIDS Research, a prestigious role that reflects her extraordinary contributions to HIV prevention research both nationally and globally. Beginning her new role in October, Dr. Donenberg brings over 23 years of distinguished service at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and an unparalleled dedication to advancing health equity.

As the former founding director of the Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science (CDIS) and associate head of research in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Donenberg has shaped groundbreaking research and implementation practices. She has conducted NIH-funded studies internationally, published over 95 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and developed impactful interventions to improve health outcomes for HIV-affected communities. Her work spans topics like family factors, sexual behavior, and substance use, alongside mentoring junior researchers globally.

Beyond her research, Dr. Donenberg serves as the Director of the Healthy Youths Program at UIC and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to training the next generation of underrepresented minority scholars in public health research.
