Heather L. Heiman, MD, named to American Board of Internal Medicine’s Board of Directors
The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) announced that Heather L. Heiman, MD, has been appointed to the Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2024.
The Board of Directors sets the future direction, strategy and goals for the organization, and develops and maintains important partnerships in the healthcare community. Board members provide important insights into what constitutes excellence in patient care.

Baron, MD, MACP, President and Chief Executive Officer of ABIM. “Dr. Heiman’s years of service on the ABIM Internal Medicine Approval Committee and distinguished career have given her a depth of understanding and expertise that will help ensure ABIM continues to deliver a program that is relevant and meaningful to internists. We look forward to her contributions on the Board.”
Dr. Heiman is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She serves as Interim Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and maintains a busy outpatient internal medicine practice within the Academic Internal Medicine division. Dr. Heiman previously served as Chair of the ABIM Internal Medicine Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA®) Approval Committee. She received the Midwest Clinician Educator Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine in 2012. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
ABIM's governance structure consists of more than 300 board certified physicians as well as allied patients, patient advocates and interprofessional health care team members on more than 50 boards and committees.
