Dr. Momen Abbasi Awarded American Kidney Fund Fellowship for Innovative Non-Invasive Kidney Disease Assessment Research
The American Kidney Fund (AKF) named Dr. Momen Abbasi as one of the two recipients of its 2025 Clinical Scientist in Nephrology (CSN) fellowship program on March 25, 2025, in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Abbasi, a nephrology fellow at the University of Illinois Chicago, is pioneering non-invasive kidney disease assessment by leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze functional MRI scans. His research aims to identify imaging patterns that predict worsening kidney function, offering a safer alternative to biopsies and potentially guiding targeted treatments for high-risk patients.
Since its inception in 1989, the CSN program has supported over 50 emerging nephrology scholars, fostering innovation in diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes while providing training in medical ethics, biostatistics, and epidemiology.
