Session Description:
Research can help us address some of the most pressing global development challenges of our time, but only if it is effectively put into policy and practice. While many different types of barriers prevent evidence use by policymakers and practitioners, strategic communication can be an effective solution to engage these decisionmakers and ensure evidence-based implementation. This session will offer insights on how to distill and package research findings and recommendations in concise, memorable, and action-oriented ways. The discussion will also detail how to systematically share research findings with the right people at the right time to increase the likelihood that the information is seen, understood, and used to shape policy, programming, and funding decisions.
Speaker Bio:
Carolyn currently serves as a Senior Strategic Communications Advisor at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). She equips senior government officials, advocates, and other influential stakeholders with timely and accurate information on critical global health and development issues such as immunization, nutrition, water security, and more. Before joining USAID, she designed innovative research-to-action strategies and creative policy communications products to promote the use of data and evidence among development decisionmakers. Carolyn also has experience managing pubic-public private partnerships and previously co-led a policy campaign that successfully shaped corporate commitments to improve the health and well-being of women in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation and Business for Social Responsibility. During her graduate studies, she served as a Policy Fellow with the D.C. Primary Care Association where she conducted qualitative research on maternal and reproductive health challenges among low-income, women of color living in the nation’s capital. She has held positions with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Population Reference Bureau, and Save the Children. Carolyn holds a master’s degree in public health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a bachelor’s degree in law and society from American University.
