Meeting Patients Where They Are: Reducing Stroke Risk in the ER

Emergency Medicine faculty member Dr. Heather Prendergast leads NIH-funded research advancing stroke prevention and health equity.

In a newly published study in JAMA Cardiology, UIC Emergency Medicine faculty member Dr. Heather Prendergast led a first-of-its-kind NIH-funded clinical trial showing that a simple intervention during an emergency department visit — a brief consultation paired with a smartphone-connected blood pressure monitor — significantly improved blood pressure control six months later. The findings highlight how emergency departments can play a vital role in stroke prevention and advancing health equity for historically underserved communities. Read the full study here.
