Healthcare Disparities Scholarship

The Department of Emergency Medicine has established the Health Disparities Scholarship for senior medical students considering a career in Emergency Medicine (EM). This scholarship program offers exposure to an academic EM training program at an institution dedicated to mitigating health disparities through research and practice. Participants will engage in hands-on experiences and gain valuable insights into various EM sub-specialty areas actively pursued at UIC, including:

  • Health disparities research
  • Toxicology
  • Ultrasound (US)
  • Social Emergency Medicine
  • Education and Simulation (SIM)
  • Resuscitation
  • Health Policy and Administration

About the Program Heading link

Selected fourth-year medical students will be able to rotate at the University of Illinois Hospital Emergency Department (ED). This immersive program includes participating in weekly residency conferences and workshops and fulfilling clinical duties. Students will also develop and present an evidence-based medical presentation on a relevant case encountered during their rotation.

Purpose

The program aims to mentor and empower students interested in Emergency Medicine, focusing on addressing health disparities. It seeks to enhance diversity in the medical field by offering a comprehensive experience in an academic Emergency Medicine department and residency training program.

Eligibility

Highly motivated fourth-year medical students with strong academic records and an interest or background in health disparities are encouraged to apply.

4-Week Program: $1500

*Scholarship Funds will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the elective.

Examples of covered expenses include:

  • airfare/travel to/from home location to UIC
  • housing cost
