Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Instructional Series
Fellow’s didactic curriculum is conducted every third Tuesday of the month, with three hour long sessions. Fellows are excused from all clinical and research responsibilities during these sessions. The primary goal of the instructional series is to prepare fellows for the American Board of Pediatrics’ Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Board Certificate Exam. Core subject areas include:
• Benign Hematology, including Disorders of Red Cells, Anemia, Coagulation and Thrombosis
• Malignant Hematology
• Solid Tumors
• Neuro-oncology
• Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant
• Therapeutics, including chemotherapy, cellular and immunotherapy
• Academic Skills – via didactic sessions and monthly fellow-led Journal Club
• Evidence Based Medicine – monthly via Tumor Board/complex hematology case conference
GME Core Curriculum & UIC Pediatrics Curriculum
Fifteen module online curriculum developed by UIC’s office of Graduate Medical Education to provide residents and fellows with the information they will need in preparation of their joining the physician community. Topic highlights include:
• Biostatistics
• Scientific method
• Human subjects research – IRB, HIPAA, ethics, grant writing, abstract preparation, manuscript preparation
• End-of-life issues
• Life after fellowship – practice management, patient billing
Sessions are augmented by quarterly sessions provided for all pediatric subspecialty fellows by faculty within the UIC Department of Pediatrics. Sessions include CV/Resume preparation, How to write a manuscript, Grant Writing, Interviewing for your first academic position.
