On behalf of the all the residents and faculty of the Department of OB/GYN at the University of Illinois at Chicago, we would like to be the first to welcome you and thank you for your interest in our residency program. The University of Illinois Medical Center is a level 3 NICU Center located in the heart of the Medical District and surrounded by incredible communities such as Little Italy, Pilsen, and China Town in Chicago, IL. As a resident in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, you will receive a training experience that is second to none in a city unlike any other.
Weekly didactic lectures and daily teaching rounds provide a solid foundation in general OB/GYN knowledge as well as a way to stay up-to-date on the most recent trends in women’s care. Additionally, there is a multitude of opportunities to participate in clinical research and scholarly publications. OB/GYN residents routinely attend and present at local, regional, and national conferences including ACOG, SMFM, and SRI.
The clinical experience you will receive at the University of Illinois at Chicago is truly exceptional. During your PGY-1 year, you will provide care for a wide variety of patients as you become proficient and hone your clinical skills. You will also be expected to perform all primary cesarean sections and become familiar with out-patient pregnancy care. In addition, you will have clinical rotations in both family planning and REI. As you advance into your PGY-2 and PGY-3 years, you will be exposed to increasingly complex scenarios: including gynecology oncology, minimally invasive surgery, and pediatric OBGYN. You will become comfortable managing complicated pregnant women and challenging post-operative gynecology and gynecology oncology patients. Specialty rotations at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Advocate Christ Medical Center, and MacNeal Hospital will allow not only for a very broad clinical experience, but they will also give you perspectives on the dynamics of different types of institutions from governmental to academic and private practice. The autonomy of the other institutions is great for learning, and the patient populations are very diverse at the different hospitals so you will take care of women that represent the true population of Chicago.
Our attending faculty members actively support all career endeavors. Residents have matched for fellowships at prestigious institutions like Brown University, University of California – San Francisco, Northwestern, and Boston University to name a few. Upon completion of your residency, you will be exceptionally well prepared to pursue elite fellowship opportunities or begin a career in private practice or academic OB/GYN.
We are a very family friendly program and truly enjoy spending time together outside of work. We have a weekly trivia team and we often get together for drinks on Friday(especially the interns who always have Friday night off together!) and brunch on the weekends. Once again, welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. We look forward to meeting you!
