Emergency Medicine Career Electives
Our EM career elective is for students who plan to apply for EM residency. The career electives are available at each site in our four-hospital consortium.
Rotation block Heading link
Medical students are assigned to rotate at a single hospital site for a four-week block, with five students assigned to each site during a single block; scheduling is done centrally through UIC. Please let us know if the dates you have available do not match our rotation dates, we will try to make an exception on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Students who attend International Medical Schools are not eligible for this elective.
Medical student education sessions Heading link
Although students rotate at just one site, they will have the opportunity to tour our other hospital Emergency Departments during educational conferences led by senior residents.
Alongside our weekly conferences, students can also participate in educational sessions tailored specifically for medical students. These focused lectures and hands-on workshops—offered after the main conference—cover essential topics like EKG interpretation, ultrasound techniques, and airway management, including procedural skills.
All SIM Lab sessions take place at the Mile Square Health Center’s Simulation and Integrative Learning Institute (SAIL), located at 1220 S. Wood St. on the 5th floor.
Residency interviews Heading link
Students who rotate with us within the first four blocks of the year have the opportunity to interview for our Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Interviews are conducted every four weeks following the weekly conferences.
Please note that the dual Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency requires a separate application and interview process.
Residency program social event Heading link
We host monthly resident gatherings, providing an excellent opportunity to get to know our residents, attendings, and residency leadership team beyond those you work with directly. During the first four blocks, these gatherings also serve as residency socials, and we highly encourage you to join us.
