Welcome to the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. Since its founding, our MFM Division has been at the forefront of providing high-quality care to high-risk pregnant women and their unborn babies. This tradition continues today, as we remain committed to delivering the best possible outcomes to our patients and their families. Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists are part of a multidisciplinary team that includes adult and pediatric cardiologists, neonatologists, genetic counselors, pediatric surgeons, pharmacists, and anesthesiologists. We provide consultative clinical and ultrasound services for complex, high-risk conditions throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. We are also an integral part of the University of Illinois Hospital Perinatal Network Center.
Combining clinical and research training is at the core of our mission. Our medical and research educators have outstanding experience in high-risk pregnancy, ultrasound, prenatal diagnostic invasive procedures (CVS, amniocentesis, cordocentesis). Much of the amazing progress realized in the field of high-risk pregnancy in the last decade has emerged from innovative technologies, such as analysis of fetal DNA. Our faculty are experienced in prenatal genetic diagnosis and application of novel research approaches and leading edge techniques, including high-throughput genomics, proteomics and transcriptomics.
For the past 30 years, our division has produced prominent academic leaders in our subspecialty. Continuing in this tradition, our faculty and fellows are pioneers in cutting edge research with potential to impact clinical practice nationwide. As a testimony to our intellectually stimulating environment, faculty members of both the Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Research divisions have been awarded federal and private foundation research grants. Such funding has played an important role in enabling our Perinatal Research group to design studies aimed at discovering new biomarkers with scientific and clinical relevance for preterm birth, preeclampsia, coagulation disorders, and neonatal sepsis. We fully embrace the responsibility to educate the next generation of Maternal Fetal Medicine leaders, and we are determined to maintain the highest standards of research and training to meet our educational and scientific goals.
