Established in 1987, the Simulation and Integrative Learning Institute was one of the first standardized patient-based clinical performance assessment centers in the world.

Over the years, we have facilitated technology-based and human-based simulation experiences for thousands of healthcare students and professionals. SAIL envisions a future where patient-partnered simulation strategies empower the entire healthcare community, encompassing patients, families, and diverse stakeholders. We aspire to create an inclusive learning environment that fosters comprehensive healthcare professionals, aligning with the UI College of Medicine's mission to elevate community health. Our goal is to pioneer simulations that not only prioritize patient safety but also embrace the richness of human experiences, ensuring healthcare providers are equipped with empathy, expertise, and a commitment to delivering equitable care globally.

Advancing Healthcare Through Simulation and Human Connection

The Simulation and Integrative Learning Institute (SAIL) at the University of Illinois College of Medicine has been a leader in simulation-based education since 1987. Today, we integrate human-based and technology-based approaches to develop the clinical, communication, and leadership skills essential for high-quality, patient-centered care.

Each year, we partner with thousands of learners across the health professions, creating experiences that go beyond practice—fostering reflection, growth, and transformation. At our core, we believe authentic human interaction prepares skilled, empathetic, and adaptable professionals.

Through innovation, collaboration, research, and a commitment to health equity and patient safety, SAIL is shaping the future of healthcare education.
