About

Dr. Lauren Maggio is a Professor and the Director of Research the Department of Medical Education. Dr. Maggio completed her PhD in health professions education at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in collaboration with the University of California, San Francisco. She also holds a Master of Library and Information Science from Simmons University. Prior to arriving at UIC in 2024, Dr. Maggio was a Professor of Medicine and the Associate Director of Research for the Center of Health Professions Education at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Dr. Maggio is an internationally recognized scholar and researcher in the field of health professions education having published more than 130 peer-reviewed articles featured in premiere journals and key book chapters and books. She is a proponent of open science. Dr. Maggio also serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the journal Perspectives on Medical Education.

Research Interest

Dr. Maggio’s research explores the creation, dissemination and use of biomedical information. In particular, she has examined the ways in which to effectively connect physicians, learners and patients with biomedical information through the design of educational interventions and technical solutions, and by facilitating access to knowledge for public and professional use. As a component of her research. Dr. Maggio also explores and advocates for the responsible conduct of research, including practices related to authorship, data deposit, and scholarly publishing. Her scholarship combines her expertise in information and data science with over 15 years of experience teaching in schools of medicine.
