We are thrilled to announce our new psychiatry-family medicine combined residency program at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). It seemed a natural progression for us to take two seasoned and excellent residency programs, which already have several areas of collaboration, and combine them into one 5-year training program. We believe that mental health and physical health are inseparable, and this program will perfectly balance the multiple perspectives needed to deliver outstanding comprehensive care across both fields. Our institution serves an extremely diverse population, and as one of the top Medicaid providers in Illinois, our patients represent some of the most vulnerable and underserved communities in and surrounding Chicago. Our affiliation with our FQHC, Mile Square Health Center, allows us to extend our care to under- and uninsured as well as undocumented patients. We believe that this combined psychiatry and family medicine residency will train you to provide the most comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered care for all patients.

We believe that healthcare is a human right, and that vulnerable and underserved populations extend beyond socioeconomic status; thus health inequities are a special focus of our program. We have strong training in substance use disorders (SUD), including SUDs in pregnancy, reproductive health and pregnancy care, LGBTQ+ heath/gender-affirming care, harm reduction, geriatrics, and more.

Our family medicine and psychiatric inpatient services serve some of the sickest and most vulnerable patients in Chicago. Our academic inpatient psychiatric unit is able to handle complex medical-psychiatric cases, neuropsychiatry, deliver safe and effective electroconvulsive therapy, and is a leader in the inpatient care of pregnant women. Our outpatient and collaborative care services extend this mission beyond the hospital. Our institution has strengths in psychiatric services research, and combined trained residents are well positioned at the interface of our institutional leadership in these areas.

If you are looking for full-spectrum academic family medicine and comprehensive psychiatric training with a special focus on vulnerable populations and academic career trajectories, we hope you will consider the UIC Psychiatry-Family Medicine Combined Residency Program.
