Match Day Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
In an annual ceremony known as “Match Day,” graduating medical students around the country and at the University of Illinois College of Medicine discover where they will begin their careers as doctors. During the emotionally charged, suspense-filled ceremony, students are handed an envelope revealing which residency program has accepted them. The ritual takes place at the same time on the same day for all graduating U.S. medical students. At the same moment, all students learn the location for the next phase of their training. The annual “Match” is conducted by the National Resident Matching Program―a computerized system that matches the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency programs at U.S. teaching hospitals. The NRMP is a private, not-for-profit corporation established in 1952 to provide uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical education throughout the United States. Each year approximately 16,000 U.S. medical school seniors compete for residency positions in the United States.
While the event space at the UIC Forum does not require a specific dress code, we strongly recommend dressing in business attire for the Match Day presentation.
Parking is available at UIC Lot #5 (1029 S. Morgan, 1 block west of the Forum) and Lot #6 (1135 S. Halsted) and will cost $10.00.
If these lots fill to capacity, drivers can also park in Lot #4 (the Halsted Street Parking Structure) for the same rate ($10.00) but drivers should state that they are attending the Match Day event at the Forum.
Students are not required to purchase tickets for themselves.
No, guest do not have to pay to attend the Match Day celebration. M4 students will be required to enter the names of their guest(s) when they RSVP to attend the event.
We are initially offering all M4 students the opportunity to RSVP for five (5) guest tickets for their family members (parents, siblings, children, spouse/partner, etc.). After March 2nd and if space permits, we will notify students that additional guest tickets are available. Instructions for requesting additional guests will be sent to the class.
