I was raised by my mother in a culturally rich and ethnically diverse neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, which was also, unfortunately, resource poor and medically underserved. Growing in urban poverty has motivated me to dedicate my career as a physician to eliminate health disparities and deliver culturally responsive care within urban underserved communities. As a Family Medicine physician, I know the value in taking an upstream, preventative approach to health care, and recognize that building comprehensive and affordable health systems that address the social determinants of health, results in better patient outcomes and greater health equity. To pursue these ambitions, I attended the University of California, Berkeley for college, majoring in molecular and cell biology, and while there, I was also blessed to meet my incredible wife, Veronica. Following college, I worked in research and volunteered in a clinic for uninsured patients. I then went to medical school at Touro University California, where I got my medical degree and master’s in public health. In medical school, I worked to promote diversity and inclusion, lead our free clinic, and established a pre-medical pipeline for underrepresented students. Now, as a resident physician, I am beyond excited to have joined UIC Family Medicine, who’s passion for social justice and providing high-quality care for urban underserved communities is unparalleled.
