About
Dr. Karriem S. Watson, DHSc, MS, MPH was a research scientist with the University of Illinois Cancer Center and the Director of the Office of Community Engaged Research and Implementation Science (OCERIS) for the UI Cancer Center and the Mile Square Health Center, a group of Federally Qualified Health Clinics (FQHCs) affiliated with the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System. Dr. Watson has a Doctorate in Health Science (Global Health), a Master of Science in Basic Medical Research, and a Master’s in Public Health (Community Health Sciences).
His work with OCERIS supported the UI Cancer Center by fostering community and academic partnerships and supporting research and training conducted at the community level. The UI Cancer Center has become one of the country’s first community-focused cancer centers by fostering access to and awareness of community-based cancer screening, education, prevention services, survivorship support, and clinical trial engagement.
He sits on several national and local boards dedicated to strengthening community capacity as well as youth development to foster the interest of young people in science, research and health care careers. His contributions earned him recognition by the Chicago Urban League as an “Innovator in STEM.”
