Surgical Pathology Fellowship

A one year fellowship in general surgical pathology is offered by the Sections of Surgical Pathology at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System at Chicago and Stroger Hospital of Cook County, Illinois. The hospitals include a 441-bed, tertiary care, university hospital (approximately 16,000 surgical pathology specimens yearly) and a 464-bed public health hospital (approximately 22,000 surgical pathology specimens yearly). A wide variety of specimens are encountered, with special emphasis on surgical oncology specimens, melanoma, ophthalmic, soft tissue, hepatic, gastrointestinal, dermatologic and transplantation (heart, lung, liver, kidney, small bowel and pancreas) pathology.
The fellowship is designed to provide a broad and intensive experience in diagnostic Surgical Pathology with emphasis on diagnostic skills and professionalism. Fellows will be responsible for grossing complex specimens, participating in sign-out sessions, frozen section interpretation, presenting cases at hospital-wide clinicopathologic conferences, supervising residents in gross examination of specimens, and supervising medical student clerkships. Resources for diagnostic and research activities include immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, laser capture microdissection, tissue mircroarrays, molecular pathology, and bioinformatics, Elective months are available.
Senior Fellowship:
Senior fellowship is available for select applicants. This fellowship emphasizes diagnostic skills at the microscope and grossing bench with supervision of residents and students, quality assurance, communication and presentation skills. The fellow will receive focused training in gastrointestinal pathology and dermatopathology. This level of fellowship provides the opportunity to work in a consultative environment to develop evidence based practice skills.
Fellowship Courses: Special coursework in medical education and “”how to”” of translational research.

Applicants should have completed four years of training in a combined AP/CP residency or three years in AP and must be eligible for a permanent Illinois license. Senior fellowship: completion of one year fellowship with 6 months of grossing experience preferred; current fellows will be given consideration for position.
