New Faculty Introductions: Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstruction Section – Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology University of Illinois at Chicago

Shilpa Iyer, MD & Alec Szlachta-McGinn, MD
We are happy to announce that the Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstruction Section of The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) at the University of Illinois College of Medicine has significantly strengthen through the addition of two new exceptional faculty.
We are happy to welcome Shilpa Iyer, MD to The Department of OBGYN as Associate Professor in the Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstruction sub-specialty. Dr. Shilpa Iyer completed medical school at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) in a joint MD/Master in Public Health (MPH) Program with the UIC School of Public Health. After she obtained her MD degree Dr. Shilpa Iyer pursued education in OBGYN and completed her training at the prestigious combined residency program Brigham and Women's Hospital/ Massachusetts General Hospital. This training was followed by a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the joined North Shore University Health System/ The University of Chicago program. Following fellowship Dr. Shilpa Iyer became faculty in the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Division at The University of Chicago where she practiced until our successful recruitment at UIC.
Dr. Shilpa Iyer is a naturally born educator. She received numerous prizes, including the Harvard Macy Scholar in Medical Education, the Resident teaching award for Harvard medical students and the Golden Apple teach award for Excellence in Residency Teaching Fellowship Award. Dr. Shilpa Iyer has a special interest in health disparities, aging and pelvic floor disorders for which she was funded as principal investigator.
We are equally thrilled to announce recruitment of Alec Szlachta-McGinn, MD as Assistant Professor in the Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Section, Department of OBGYN. Dr. Szlachta-McGinn completed his medical school education at the University of Miami followed by residency in OBGYN and joint gynecology-urology fellowship in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)-David Geffen. As a medical student, resident and fellow Alec received many prizes including the Reproductive Health and Science Award at UCLA, Top 10 basic science podium award at the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Urogenital Reconstruction clinical meeting, American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists Minimally Invasive Gynecology award, Society of Gynecologic Oncology Outstanding Resident and American Urogynecologic Society Excellence in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery awards. Dr. Alec Szlachta-McGinn has an increased interest in basic science and translational research as evident from the list of his numerous publications and abstracts presented at various national meetings.
Both Dr. Shilpa Iyer, MD and Dr. Alec Szlachta-McGinn are dedicated to clinical and surgical mastery of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor conditions. We anticipate that our most recent and valuable recruitments will strengthen even more our Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Section program and will advance women’s pelvic floor health by providing exceptional clinical and surgical care to our patients.
