Our Annual Conference, “Challenges in OB/GYN: Pearls for Practice”, held on October 27, 2023, was a big success! Our Distinguished Faculty gave state-of-the-art lectures on reproductive justice, pelvic surgery, gynecologic oncology, and obstetrical patient care issues.

The Conference began with our own faculty Dr. Jonah Fleisher, Assistant Professor of Clinical OBGYN who discussed “Moral Distress and Reproductive Injustice: Practicing Medicine Post-Roe” v. Wade. This was followed by a lecture on “What’s new in Preventing Pre-term Birth” by Dr. Catalin Buhimschi, Professor and Interim Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UIC.

This was followed by the Key Note speaker, Dr. Adrian Balica, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs at Prisma Health OBGYN Service, Columbia South Carolina. Dr. Balica presented on “The New Frontier for Understanding Pelvic Pain through Neuroanatomy”.

All three topic received excellent reviews from the attendees.

In the afternoon, our other Keynote Speaker was Nikia Grayson, DNP, MPH, CNM, FNP-C, Chief Clinical Officer at CHOICES Center for Reproductive Health, based in Tennessee. Dr. Grayson presented on “Working Toward Reproductive Justice: How Partnering with Community Birth Workers is the Way Forward.

This was followed by “Centering the Voices of the Black Birthing Community” by Karie Stewart. Karie Stewart is a Certified Nurse Midwife at UIH and is also a Co-Principal Investigator for a grant from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), a study at UI Health which is examining the Melanated Group Midwifery Care model to improve pregnancy and postpartum outcomes for Black people.

Dr. Jocelyn Ray, Assistant Professor of Clinical OBGYN at UIC, gave the lecture, “Endometrial Cancer – Personalizing Patient Care”. This covered the review of different approaches to patient care for women diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Then Dr. Ayesha Hasan, Assistant Professor of Clinical OBGYN gave the lecture, “The Use of Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Pregnancy”.

The afternoon concluded with Drs. Meera Thakkar, Michelle Firlit, Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellows at UIC, and Dr. Aswathi Jayaram, Assistant Professor of Clinical OBGYN presenting “Review of Cesarean Section Scar Ectopic Pregnancy Management.”

All the presentation were received very well by the attendees and they walked away with something that can be implemented or modified in their practice.
