Dr. Joe Zhou named Fellow by American Association of Physicists in Medicine
The UI Health Department of Radiology is pleased to announce that Dr. Xiaohong Joe Zhou, PhD, DABR, DABMP was recently named a fellow by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). Dr. Xiaohong Joe Zhou currently serves as a professor of radiology, neurosurgery and biomedical engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Chief Medical Physicist at UI Health.
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine’s mission statement is to aim for the advancement of medicine through excellence in the field of medical physics. Some of the focus areas that the organization utilizes to meet its strategic goals include innovation, education, leadership and patient care. AAPM also operates internationally, with its own scientist exchanges program, allowing members to travel abroad to promote the exchange of scientific data and development while simultaneously facilitating advancement in the field of medical physics.
Induction to Fellowship in AAPM signifies that the recipient has demonstrated excellence in leadership to the profession, service to the Association, research and scholarly works, or teaching and mentoring. Dr. Zhou has contributed to the field of medical physics through his research in cancer imaging and MRI technology developments. His research has led to novel diffusion MRI techniques to aid in the detection and prognosis of different cancers.
Zhou specializes in investigating the disease processes of cancers of the brain, prostate, and gastrointestinal system. In addition, he has contributed significantly to the professional practice of medical physics, including servicing as the vice chair for the MRI Physics Committee of the American College of Radiology (ACR) and for the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP). Being elected for fellowship in the American Association of Physicists in Medicine shows recognition for Dr. Zhou’s contributions to his field of practice as well as the association itself.
