My passion for becoming a Family Medicine physician stems from my roots growing up as a first-generation Latina in rural Illinois and desire to serve underserved and vulnerable populations. Years before I learned about health disparities and social determinants of health in college courses, my family and I knew what it meant to live in a low-income, minority household with poor health literacy skills and minimal access to healthcare in our native language. With the support of my family and now husband, I followed my dream to become una doctora. Throughout medical school, I was involved in the Latinx community serving as a Spanish interpreter, advocate, educator, mentor, and researcher. I was also fortunate to have mentors who were committed in addressing health inequities and social injustices our patients encountered on a daily basis. Therefore, when the moment came to decide on a residency program, I knew UIC Family Medicine was where I was meant to be.
