Dr. Kumar studies gap junctions and their involvement in the processes and mechanisms that are necessary for vision. His accomplishments include the cloning of the first human connexin gene, the structural determination of a gap junction channel at 7 Å resolution and the mechanism of cataractogenesis using targeted disruption of a lens connexin gene in the mouse. Dr. Kumar joined the Department in 2002.
