Dr. Helgason is board certified in both neurology and vascular neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology and currently serves as a professor here in the UIC Department of Neurology & Rehabilitation. She previously served as the Director of Cerebrovascular Services in the Department.
Dr. Helgason obtained her medical degree from the University of Iceland Medical School and thereafter, completed her residency training at the University of Chicago Hospitals. She then went on to complete two fellowships, one in Cerebrovascular Diseases (from Michael Reese Hospital) and the other in Electrophysiology & Evoked Potentials (from Rush Presbyterian Hospital).

Dr. Helgason’s area of research has evolved from clinical research of neurologic syndromes and coagulation in stroke to that involving causation using fuzzy theory and artificial adaptive systems.
