Growing up as a queer woman of color in poverty has brought me unique experiences and strengths helping me connect to communities often shunned by oppressive social structures that dominate our society. As a Curandera, a practitioner of traditional Mexican Indigenous medicine, I have a deep holistic understanding of the human experience and respect for all living beings, teachings I want to incorporate into my practice. My broad ideas and passions led me easily down the path of Family Medicine, and it was important to me to choose a program that would support my activism, curiosity and spirit. Within the first few minutes of my interview I knew the UIC Family Medicine program was exactly what I needed-the culture is overwhelmingly supportive of our residents and dedicated to compassion and justice. I am so grateful and excited for the journey ahead! Outside of patient care catch me reading horror novels, watching true crime docs, or picking up and putting down heavy objects 😛
