Please be sure to fill out the Dermatology Clinical Inquiry Google Form to provide the Program Coordinator, all necessary information for your request.
The google form is meant to keep things fair and organized. Once received, the Program Coordinator will contact you via email. Please note that the Google Form will be reviewed bi-weekly, so please keep that in mind when requesting any opportunities.
Please do not email the Program Coordinator, Program Director, Director of Dermatology Medical Student Education or faculty. All emails will be directed to the google form.
Available Rotations Heading link
We currently offer rotation opportunities for third- and fourth-year medical students.
Types of Elective/Rotation opportunities available:
- ELEC602: Dermatology-4 Week In-Person Rotation- Must complete and pass STEP 1 Testing before requesting the elective; M4’s only
- ELEC452: Fundamentals of Dermatology- 2-week rotation; M3’s
** Please note that you CANNOT take ELEC602 or ELEC452 more than once in your academic career.
UIC Medical Students need to complete the Scheduling Request Form and attach approval to join elective. The form and approval need to be submitted at least 4 weeks in advance.
Non- UIC US Medical Students can apply for elective rotations via VSLO, please note that you can only come to UIC Dermatology for 4-week rotations we do not accommodate lesser time electives.
Shadowing & Observation Experience Heading link
Shadowing Experience
UIC Affiliated (Rockford, Peoria & Chicago) Medical Students are given the opportunity to shadow faculty in clinic.
Shadowing Medical Students will be shadowing faculty, providing assistance to the faculty as they navigate through their clinical duties. This is a great way to get familiar with the day-to-day activities of Dermatologist.
Though we do accommodate Shadowing, with high demands of requests and limited faculty, we aren’t always able to accommodate every student.
Dermatology interested Medical Students in their first and second year of medical school should communicate with the Dermatology Interested Group for Medical students to get placed on the schedule during their reserved time slots.
Observation Experience
Observational experiences are reserved for NON-UIC affiliated Medical Students that are interested in Dermatology.
** Please note there is no patient contact, this is strictly an observation experience. All necessary paperwork should be completed at minimum a month in advance for the requested dates, we can only accommodate 3 days of clinical observation, subject to change due to demand.
Self- Designed Electives Heading link
Self-Designed Elective
For self-designed electives, students must submit the following to the request system:
- The purpose and objectives of the elective.
- A description of the elective with details on projected outcomes and activities.
- A description of the mechanism for assessment during this elective.
- Completed PDF Scheduling Form
Include your email confirmation from Supervising Physician or Department Coordinator.
Non- UIC US Medical & International Students Heading link
International Medical Students
International Medical Students can inquire about ELEC602: Dermatology with the Director of International Medical Student Affairs, Kay Spreitzer, kspreitz@uic.edu.
Kay receives notifications and updates to the available blocks throughout the academic year.
International Medical Students are required to follow the UIC Medical School calendar, electives cannot be adjusted out of the confirmed calendar.
International Medical Students are only allowed to take ELEC602: Dermatology, no less than 4 weeks.
VSLO- Non- UIC US Medical Students
VSLO applicants can apply to ELEC602 throughout the Academic Year.
VSLO is updated as often as possible, any dates listed are available, those not listed are not available.
VSLO Medical Students are required to follow the UIC Medical School calendar, electives cannot be adjusted out of the confirmed calendar.
VSLO Medical Students are only allowed to take ELEC602: Dermatology, no less than 4 weeks.
Undergraduate Medical Education Heading link
As a major teaching institution, we are dedicated to providing the best possible education opportunities to medical students from three campuses of the UI College of Medicine: Chicago, Rockford, and Peoria.
Shadowing is not permitted for pre-medical students or outside resident rotators.
Residents who would like to rotate with the Department of Dermatology, please contact the Program Coordinator for further instructions. Program Letter of Agreement and approval in needed on part of both institutions and will require 60-90 days of planning in advance to the requested rotation dates.
Pre-Medical or prospective medical students are encouraged to seek opportunities at private practices, as clinical slots and opportunities are reserved for Medical Students.
We appreciate your time and efforts and try our best to accommodate such a thriving community of medical professionals. Please be mindful of request, and respectful of final decisions and timeliness of communication.
Please keep in communication with the Program Coordinator in terms of Rotation, Observation and Shadowing request.
Medical Students, Residents or anyone who is NOT scheduled appropriately, will be turned away at our clinic.
Cancellation & Rescheduling Elective
Medical Students from UIC (Rockford, Peoria & Chicago), VSLO, International, and Observers/Shadowers should provide at least a month’s notice of cancellation for their clinical experience.
Clinics are high in demand, and to be respectful of faculty and fellow peers, we ask that you respect our time and effort.
Request for cancellation must be made to the Program Coordinator to successfully drop the course. UIC Medical students must submit approval along with the scheduling request form in order to drop your elective from your schedule.
Request to cancel/reschedule your elective does not guarantee your spot in another rotation block.
