Welcome to the Global Women’s Health (GWH) section at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. GWH addresses critical health issues affecting women globally through clinical service, education, and research. GWH is committed to confronting health disparities and increasing healthcare capacity for ALL women regardless of location or wealth.
GWH’s work is only possible through collaboration with dynamic local partners. When the Ethiopian Ministry of Health envisioned creating a center of excellence in maternal care for Sub-Saharan Africa at Mekelle University, GWH and its faculty jumped at the opportunity, conducting environmental scanning visits and discussions with key leaders and donors. Ten years later, the partnership has graduated dozens of high-caliber OB/GYN residents. It has also extended to other regions of Ethiopia, including Oromiya, where GWH is a partner with Jimma University, as well as Addis Ababa. GWH’s work has even gone outside the boundaries of Ethiopia to include collaboration with Makerere University in Uganda.
UIC’s fellows, faculty, and staff have also benefited greatly from the opportunities afforded by GWH, helping create teaching practices and standards, building cross-cultural leadership, and growing their international networks. In addition to international work, GWH is active with the global community in Chicago, partnering with hospitals and academic institutions across the city and disciplines to best contribute to women’s health.
