Biographical Info

Dr. Shapiro is a board-certified physician in neurology and internal medicine with special qualifications in geriatrics. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Neurology. Her career focus has involved clinical care and teaching. Dr. Shapiro has extensive past experience in academically affiliated VA medical centers and remains engaged with patient care and education at the Jesse Brown VA Medical center.

Dr. Shapiro currently serves as the director for the medical student clerkship in neurology for UIC and is involved in both pre- and post-graduate education for physicians and other health care providers. She strives to educate and actively involve patients and families in managing their health problems. Dr. Shapiro incorporates a holistic approach, working closely with other health professionals to optimize the care of patients.

Research Interests:

Dr. Shapiro is a physician-educator who has been actively involved in collaborative clinical research including pharmaceutical, outcome-based, and nationwide VA cooperative studies. She is dedicated to improving health delivery for individuals and families coping with dementia and other cognitive disorders, and addressing the needs of special populations with neurological
disorders. Dr. Shapiro is the Site Principal Investigator for the IDEAS research study, Imaging Dementia-Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDEAS Study), sponsored by the American College of Radiology Imaging Network and the Alzheimer’s Association.
