About

Evelyn Figueroa, MD, is a UIC professor and Director of Community Engagement in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Figueroa is a Chicago native and completed school locally, including UIC College of Medicine. After working at a northern California FQHC immediately after residency, she returned to UIC COM as faculty in 2005. She has always balanced community volunteerism with a broad family medicine clinical practice. With her family, in 2018, she founded the Pilsen Food Pantry, and its programs have provided access to food, clothing, medical supplies, and more to nearly 200,000 local households. In response to the Texas border migrant crisis, in 2023, Dr. Figueroa supported new emergency Chicago shelters and profoundly expanded her nonprofit’s services. With medical students from UIC and beyond the Mobile Migrant Health Team was created, a team of physicians, health care students, and additional volunteers that provided over 9000 medical assessments in just seven months. Recently, MMHT started a free clinic at the pantry, especially for uninsured migrants with significant healthcare gaps. Over the course of her career, Dr. Figueroa has received numerous awards for her teaching and advocacy work. In 2023, she was named one of the Chicagoans of the Year by Chicago Magazine, and in 2024, she was honored with an Illinois Academy of Family Physicians President’s Award. Dr. Figueroa is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), a national medical honors society.
