The Borriello lab studies the biology of breast cancer metastasis with the goal of developing new treatments to block and prevent metastatic relapse. We have a particular interest in understanding how the tumor microenvironment, especially immune and stromal cells, regulates tumor dormancy and reactivation. To this end, we use a multidisciplinary approach spanning multiplex immunofluorescence, organotypic culture, multiphoton intravital imaging, and in vivo models, with the mission of developing novel therapeutic strategies to eradicate dormant tumor cells and combat mortality from metastasis. In her talk, Dr. Borriello will discuss how the cross-talk between fibroblasts and neutrophils drives the awakening of dormant tumor cells in metastatic niches, and how new imaging technologies can help us better understand the dynamics of these communications in the lung microenvironment.
