Clinical care
Our approach to patient diagnosis and management is consultative and educational in addition to providing state-of-the-art testing. We realize the importance of providing meaningful test results and relevant information necessary for optimal patient management. As a result of active participation in interdepartmental clinical investigations, our laboratories continuously evaluate and develop new tests and implement the newest testing instrumentation. The facilitates the Department’s dedication to training the next generation of practicing and experimental pathologists.
Research
To capitalize on the unique position of the Pathology Department’s relationships with clinical and basic research departments, our research effort has a strong translational focus. We recently established a laboratory in Whole Genome Sequencing that includes participation by multiple clinical and basic science investigators. The Department is actively investigating new ways to study tissues and cells using whole slide imaging and a novel IF interrogation method that aids traditional histology and immunohistochemical techniques. A novel section of Translational Research Pathology helps integrate research throughout the College of Medicine as well as the other Health Science Colleges and Schools of the University. The Pathology Informatics division brings together the clinical and research efforts of the Department. The exceedingly important role of informatics in Pathology resulted in being the first Pathology Departments to establish a Clinical Informatics Fellowship Programs recognized by the American Board of Pathology and ACGME.
A matrix or programmatic Department structure is superimposed on the classic Anatomic, Clinical and Research organization of the past. This provides for a solid operational foundation for all of its endeavors, but with a design that is flexible and innovative to accommodate the rapid changes in health care and new developments in biomedical research. We hope this overview spurs your interest in knowing more about our unique and progressive Department and its programs, and we encourage you to explore our web site to learn more.
