Program Description: Supervise, mentor and help train Mexican physician doing their service year post graduation, in 10 rural health clinics in the Sierra Madre Mountains.

Community for Children Heading link
Location: Brownsville Texas/Mexico Border
Program Description: Community for Children’s curriculum is focused on professional development of the physician as advocate within an international setting. Medical students and residents are taken out of the hospital and clinic settings into an international setting to discover sources of health, disease and healing within any particular community. A significant amount of time is spent in the community, assessing needs and implementing advocacy projects, in collaboration with community organizations and the families they serve. Participants make house calls, getting to know the families and their struggles. There is also protected time for reflection, the role of advocacy in participants’ lives and work, individualized development counseling and close mentoring from CforC faculty.

University of Illinois Department of Pediatrics Heading link
Location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Program Description: Two paired residents for a 2-weeks observational rotations in pediatric infectious disease, pediatric ICU, and general pediatric clinic in a new 1,000 beds high acuity children’s hospital. Opportunity to assist UIC faculty in the modified PALS skills stations for an interdisciplinary pediatric surgical emergency course, and to participate in longitudinal research projects in Vietnam. Location: Ayder Comprehensive Referral Hospital, Mekelle University, Mek’ele, Ethiopia.
Program Description: Mekelle University is one of the leading university’s in the rapidly growing country and is at the forefront of research and international collaboration. Ayder Referral Hospital, the teaching hospital affiliated with the university, serves a catchment population of 8 million. It has an inpatient capacity of 500 beds and serves more than 100,000 patients every year.
In addition to medicine, Mekelle University houses leading faculties in information technology, engineering, and agricultural sciences. Unique among Ethiopian universities, Mekelle University provides academic opportunities to students from neighboring South Sudan, several of whom are completing OB/GYN residencies alongside Ethiopian peers.
UIC works with Mekelle University to expand the OB/GYN collaboration and now adds this PEDIATRIC collaboration.
Pediatrics : 1-2 residents at a time, 3-4 residents per year
