|GME Core Curriculum Overview:
The Online GME Core Curriculum has been developed by the Department of Medical Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine in collaboration with participating institutions. This program was created to address the general competencies requirements for the accreditation of graduate medical education programs. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires that every residency program include education and assessment of the resident’s competency in patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, systems based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and communication. Because the topics span all specialties, this is referred to as the GME "Core" curriculum.
An online format was chosen for the core curriculum to provide easy access for all residents regardless of their rotation schedule or location. The list of subjects was developed based on feedback from program directors, faculty physicians, and residents themselves. Faculty for the modules include physicians and professors from the UIC Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, and the Department of Communications, along with other specialists. Course design provides each participant with an opportunity to review instructional materials, engage in reflection or research, and to participate in online discussions overseen by faculty moderators. For the purposes of these discussions, residents are assigned to small groups that remain together for all of the modules. Credit for participation in each module is awarded upon completion of the course requirements, submission of an end-of-module evaluation form, and review by a faculty moderator.
Modules can be made available on a schedule to suit the needs of each program or institution. Residents can log in from any computer with Internet access and at any time of the day or night. They can complete several modules within a short period of time, or they can skip a quarter when they have a particularly difficult rotation. Tools are provided for Program Faculty to help them integrate the online topics into their existing educational activities as well as for accessing online reports of their residents’ progress. Guest access is available to faculty from programs that are interested in participation in the GME Core Curriculum.
