Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that Mitch King, MD has accepted our offer to assume the leadership of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford as the Interim-Regional Dean on March 8, 2013 marking a transition in leadership following Dr. Martin Lipsky’s retirement.

Martin Lipsky, MD, has served with distinction as the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford Regional Dean. After nearly 10 years of dedicated and able leadership, Dr. Lipsky has decided to step down from his position as Regional Dean. A search committee for the permanent replacement, chaired by Dr. William Chamberlin, has been convened. Dr. Lipsky’s tenure as Dean has been characterized by many significant achievements, and through his leadership the College of Medicine at Rockford completed a 58,000 square foot, $26 million renovation and expansion project, established a new Master Degree program in medical biotechnology, and partnered with the Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing and Public Health to establish an expanded health science campus.

Dr. Lipsky has provided outstanding leadership in Rockford to enhance educational and research programs and ensure that the University of Illinois continues to produce top quality physicians and biomedical researchers. He has worked diligently to ensure that the College of Medicine in Rockford maintains the highest standard of excellence in the region, and has successfully done this through community partnerships and collaborations.

Dr. Mitch King is a professor in the department of family and community medicine and has worked closely with Dr. Lipsky since 2005 as the associate dean for academic affairs for the College of Medicine in Rockford. In this role Dr. King has helped lead the Rockford campus to curricular transformation while remaining active in teaching medical students and residents. Dr. King additionally serves on numerous college committees and is the chair of the Rockford Committee on Instruction and Appraisal. Clinically, he has focused his practice on geriatrics and has served as medical director for a skilled nursing facility and a hospice agency. He is active on the Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Team and the county Elder Abuse Fatality Review Team.  He has been selected as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in primary care for Chicago in 2011, 2003, 2002 and 2001.

Dr. King received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Prior to joining the Illinois Medicine team, he spent several years at Northwestern University Medical School where he developed and served as residency program director and interim department chair for family medicine.

Dr. King has authored numerous peer reviewed papers and book chapters and is co-editor of two books, including a popular family medicine textbook, Blueprints in Family Medicine. Dr. King has presented nationally on a wide variety of topics and recognized in 2002 by the American Academy of Family Medicine as the best research presentation for his research on coding. Currently, he is the site lead investigator for the Enroll-HD International Database Study (Huntington’s Disease).

Please join me in congratulating Dr. King and wishing Dr. Lipsky the very best in his future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Dimitri Azar, MD, MBA
