About

Biographical Info

Peter Gann, MD, ScD is Professor of Pathology in Urology and Co-Leader of the Prostate Cancer Working Group at UIC.  His primary appointment is Professor in the Department of Pathology.  He serves as Program Leader for the Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program of the University of Illinois Cancer Center, and as Academic Director for Tissue Imaging in the Research Histology and Tissue Imaging Core (RHTIC) facility at UIC.

Dr. Gann’s research focuses on the chemoprevention of cancer and the development of novel biomarkers, chiefly focusing on prostate cancer.  By combining his expertise in population science and molecular and imaging technologies, his research uses epidemiologic methods to critically assess emerging technologies in tumor detection, imaging and outcome prediction.

Recently, Dr. Gann received the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program Biomarker Development Award, a three-year award which will allow him to conduct a randomized trial examining a novel biomarker on treatment choice and the psychological status of men with low-risk prostate cancer. Dr Gann will lead a  multisite study to be conducted at UIC, the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

His ongoing research, funded by the National Cancer Institute, investigates the application of computer vision and other advanced imaging approaches to address questions related to the risk of progression in prostate cancer.  He has published 120 journal articles and serves as an Associate Editor for Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

Dr. Gann completed his medical training and postdoctoral fellowship at University of Pennsylvania.  He later went on to receive a Doctorate in Epidemiology from Harvard University.
