About
Our laboratory focuses on understanding how nutrients affect infection. In order to cause infections, bacteria have evolved to acquire nutrients from their infected host. By contrast, hosts have evolved mechanisms to kill bacteria and prevent bacterial nutrient acquisition. Many of these mechanisms of nutrient sequestration remain uncharacterized. In addition to host limitation of bacterial nutrients, the nutritional status of the host impacts immunity to infection. Our lab uses dietary zinc deficiency and pneumonia caused by the multidrug resistant pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii to understand how nutrients impact bacterial infection.
